These amazing underwater icicles, or brinicles (combination of the word brine and icicle), are known as the "finger of death". That is a good name for them. Not only does it look like a finger pointing down to the sea bed, but it creates destruction as it hits the ocean floor.
Watch this awesome video footage which was done with time-lapse photography. It shows the formation of the brinicle and its descent to the ocean floor in Antartica... and the unfortunate death of all the little starfish. Sad, yet mind-boggling at the same time when one sees the power of Nature at work.
